Army Evicts Palestinian Family in Jordan Valley to Facilitate Settlement

March 27, 2011 - On Friday morning, 25 March, Israeli soldiers forcefully removed a Palestinian family from their tent in the Ein al-Helwa region of the northern Jordan Valley, in order to authorize a nearby Jewish settlement. The Ein al-Helwa or Wadi al Malih area is predominantly inhabited by Bedouin communities, which have been settled in the region for numerous. On Friday morning, 25 March, Israeli soldiers forcefully removed a Palestinian family from their tent in the Ein al-Helwa region of the northern Jordan Valley, in order to authorize a nearby Jewish settlement.

The Ein al-Helwa or Wadi al Malih area is predominantly inhabited by Bedouin communities, which have been settled in the region for numerous. The area is in close proximity to the settlements of Sdemot Mehola, Rotem (Nahal) and Maskiyyot (Nahal).

Last week's encounter began on Wednesday, when 25 settlers provocatively set up their tent next to the Daraghmeh family's home of 15 years. When the Israeli army arrived on Friday, the troops aggressively evicted the Daraghmeh family.

The most recent action in Ein al-Helwa is consistent with the trend of continued Israeli military hostility in the area; over the past several years the region has experienced numerous evictions in Wadi al Malih (northern Jordan Valley), and in the past few months demolitions of Palestinian homes in Khirbet Yasra and the village of Khirbet Tana (western Jordan Valley).

Although Israeli soldiers indicated that they intended to remove the settlers’ tent in addition to Nabil Daraghmeh's, Daraghmeh and his four children are left without a home, while the settlement outpost remains in what is now considered a 'closed military area'.

According to the Wadi al-Malih village council head, Aref Daraghmeh, the Israeli forces used the escalation of discord among the inhabitants to justify the removal of Palestinian families, the Palestinian News Network reported.

Following demolition of their home, Nabil's family attempted to relocate next to the main road in the village. However, after trying to build another tent, the army mandated that they leave the area.

According to Jordan Valley Solidarity, a grassroots campaign encompassing various Palestinian groups, the family now has no other choice but to sleep in the Jordan Valley Solidarity school.
